Choosing my Fonts.

After much deliberation, I have rounded down the potential fonts that will be the central font for my music digi-pack.

Font 1 - I decided to choose this font as the subverted "N" letter appealed to me and I thought it would reflect the subverted feel to my music video. The font is pretty simplistic and thus, wont draw attention to the other elements within my music video.

Font 2 - I thought this font would pertain to the male target I was appealing to. The hard edges and lines make it look more masculine. Like the font above, I feel the subversive letters will equally feel to the subversive nature of my music video.

Font 3 - So far, this is my least favourite font. I feel this would not bring much to my music poster as the lines are too soft, and look feminine. However, the letters are easily readable and simplistic enough to not overshadow the overall music digi-pack.

Font 4 - I like the short and stumpy design to this font and feel it would add a unique feel to my music poster. However, it almost appears too masculine and block like, and would not appeal to an overall target.

Feedback: This is some feedback from classmates

Jack: I like font number 4 best as I feel it looks manly and appeals to my age and gender. The one I least like is font number 3 as it looks too silly and I believe this would not go with the music song of Lance's choice.

Ash: As a female, I feel the best font would be number 1 as it seems to appeal to both genders. Whilst font 2 is interesting, I feel it is almost too quirky in effect with a music poster or album cover.

Alex: My favourite font so far is number 2 as it is the most neutral and would suit most people. However, to be bold Lance could also choose number 1.

Sarah: Font 3 is my least favourite as I feel it would not suit the music genre Lance is pertaining to. My favourite font so far is number 2 as it looks fun and has a lot of potential to create different designs with it.

Characters

These are the two main characters for my Media Studies video.

Ashleigh Thomas - I have chosen Ashleigh because she is a friend of mine who I can trust. Ashleigh lives close enough for us to be able to meet up accordingly to film my video and has had experiences in acting before.

Charlie Clarke - I have decided to choose Charlie because not only is she a close friend of mine, but of my primary character Ashleigh, therefore we all get on very well. Charlie also lives near me and is able to meet up to film my music video.

I have decided to use girls and not guys in my music video to create an unconventional approach to my music video as the song I have decided to choose is sung by a male, with their band a generally male targeted band. Therefore, I have added my own twist by taking the conventions of females and subversing it. Upon this, I feel females will bring a much more empathetic and sympathy creating feel to my music video.

Poster Research: I

Before I begin making a poster to accompany both my music video and album cover, I decided to look at posters by similar genres, this poster is actually one advertising a documentary showing Iron Maiden's 2008 Somewhere back in Time world tour. The Poster features an airplane, a reference to the tour, Iron Maiden's mascot, Eddie is seen tearing up the plane as it flies, the plane has 'Iron Maiden' written on the side, this is a reference to how when the band lands it will bring destruction with it, this is a common theme in heavy metal music, the genre sees itself as a musical revolution. The Image is of main importance, however as both the band's name appears twice, and the bands mascot are present, there is a clear sense of identification of this poster with Iron Maiden, fans will however be familiar with the image, and know who it is. People not familiar with the bands artwork will be shocked and intrigued by the image, which will grab the attention of passers by, this is the main point of a poster.

Mise-En-Scene

I have chosen the clothing for the actors to wear in the film, it was chosen by me to represent a change in attitude and personality within the characters.

The Primary character, who will begin the video at the location, will begin the video wearing dark colours, this is to convey grieving within the person, and to portray he characrer as feeling melanholy.
This will be contrasted by the secondary Character, who will be making their way towards the first, they will be wearing light colours, conveying a sense "heaven" and spirituality, this will remain throughout the video, being the constant around everchanging locations and people as the person moves through the town to get to the location.

Therefore for me, clothing is important as it will embody the characters and who they represent in my spooky/spiritual theme.

Charactersistics of my Genre

Its important that in my music video i include conventionalities within my chosen genre of music, so that it can be identified as from within that genre. Characterstics of the Heavy Rock genre is dark colours and little mise-en-scene, both locations and clothes can vary greatly.

Depending on preference i can utilize a wide variety of mise-en-scene and still be relative to the rock genre, such as a fast paced city scene, or even in the woods. Due to my geographical location and ease of filming it will probably be he latter. A Conventionality within Heavy Rock is that usually the band will take part within the video, however this will be notably absent from my video, and will feature completley non iagetic sound. As Heavy rock can span a whole spectrum of music, it is important for me to create a video which complements the video, for example, metal video's can be heavily influenced by medieval charactersistics, and accompanying themes such as witchcraft, and the church is also heavily present, just as much i could feature a music video heavily influenced on modern times, if it reflects more modern interpretations of rock, such as a band playing atop a skyscraper in the midst of a large metropolis.

It is also important to feature unconventionalities within my music video, as this will both differ my music video from ones of the same genre, and allow me to explore boundaries outside of the genre, this is something i would much like to incorporate within my music video.

Plot Draft

The plot for my music video was decided when i had an idea of how to make the best use of the location and ablilites I possess. I decided that the music video, should tell a story, and should, in some way, be relative to the song.
The song I have chosen has within its lyrics the idea of searching for something. So i have decided to make it a video about someone, i have not yet decided the gender of the people involved, or their relationship, searching for someone else who they know, this will be shown through the sending of message between the characters, which will then move on to shots to each person individually and a searching by one of the characters, and at the end ifthe video the two characters will meet, i have not decided yet whether or not this meeting will be a friendly one or a hostile one, perhaps with a dramatic ending.
One of the characters will be cold, and will be shown by mise-en-scene, this will change throughout the video, and this also will be represented by the change in clothes.
In contrast, the character searching will be shown as a friendly character whom not much is known about, so we presume the character to be a much nicer one to the other.

Choosing my location.

I have decided to film my music video in the St. Lawrence Chuchyard, a place known for its natural beauty and solemn surroundings, hopefully this will also show a sense of secludedness in the shots i film there, my choosing of location is meant to represent the characters emotions and needs for one another. It is also meant to convey a sense of being lost, but intentionally lost. I have decided that the opening and closing shots will take place here, to both signify the ending of the track alongside the returning to normality after the song has closed.

The location is to serve as key to the plot, with one of the characters being a recently deceased ghost and her mourning friend delivering flowers to her grave.

Shortlist - Survey

For my music video i have chosen to use a rock song, this i have not limited in terms of different ends of the rock spectrum. I held a vote between on the shortlist for which song could base my music video on.

The Seeker - The Who ( 2 Votes)
You've got Another Thing Comin' - Judas Priest ( 2 Votes)
Run to the Hills - Iron Maiden ( 3 Votes)
Paranoid - Black Sabbath (4 Votes)
Rock you like a Hurricane – Scorpions (3 Votes)
Breaking the Chains – Dokken (2 Votes)
Hunting High and Low – Stratovarius (4 Votes)
Johnny B Goode - Chuck Berry (1 Vote)

The vote came down to a draw between both 'Paranoid' by Black Sabbath & 'Hunting High and Low' by Stratovarius. In the end I decided to choose Stratovarius' Hunting High and Low as it gave me a prime opportunity to include a chase scene into my music video, and adapt around this format.

Research - Album Covers (V)

This front cover is by the band Black Sabbath and their self titled album. The Band's name is written across the top, this is also the title of the album. It is not obstructed in any way and is with the exception of the warner bros. logo, the only piece of text on the front cover except from the main image. The font is both old-worldly and gothic in appearence. The picture maintains this gothic appearance as a medieval scene is present, with a cloaked woman walking alone through a wood, with a old, abandoned house in the background. The image is used to trying to scare the audience, giving away the dark nature of their musicical influence. The camera shot is a long shot, which is enough that was can clearly see the woman, yet are too distanced to convey any sort of emotion or feelings towards her, it also shows just how isolated she is, which again adds to the feeling of anxiety, the woman may be walking towards danger. None of the band is present in the picture, and this maybe suggests that for now they still want to remain mysterious and almost unexplored as people, focusing on their music and the cult around it. The medieval theme is taken from the gothic, almost satanic form of music black sabbath adopted during this time, the middle ages was widely known to have been a era plagued with stories of 'whichcraft' and dark arts, coupled with the plague and is enormous death toll the time still has very negative connotations and reference to it is still considered dark. Drawing musical influence from the time is viewed as almost unholy by the church, and this once again draws into the anti-establishment nature of metal music, where it seeks to draw inspiration from a time period, however the inspiration is always from the unconventional, almost condemned backgrounds during that period. Metal continues to have its roots in rebellion and counter-culture.

Research - Album Covers (IV)

This album cover is by a band named Stratovarius and their album named: Polaris. The album's title is a reference to the binary start system polaris which is situated towards the north pole of earth, also known as the 'North Star'. The album cover displays a high angle shot over the earth, looking down at it from above, the earth is obstructed by metallic forms in a star shape, which are beaming white streams towards the earrh, perhaps another reference to Polaris, the fact the metallic objects are shaped like stars. Metallic and natural debris is found loating above earth and is possibly a reference to both the metallic nature of the bands sound and the natural influences of nature. The band's name is connected with the main image in that in the centre of the name a metal conducter type object, possibly the band's logo, intercepts both the band's names and the title of the album, the fact the streams are going from the metallic stars to the logo is a reference to them possibly absorbing the power of their song, and that they believe themselves to be significant. The high angle shot shows either the band recognizes its otherworldly success or that they believe themselves to be above everything. That they have reached their pinnacle. The image could also have religious conceptions as a woman's face is decending from the metallic star towards earth, with a trail of bright light behind her, she is seen as angellic. Could be percieved as a Archangel decending towards earth, as either a bastion of knowledge, power or divinity. As the north star is both considered the highest and the brightesr, and was used to help people navigate throuhout the ages, it could be a reference that the band now believe themselves to be both a driving force and a band to be followed by other similar artists, that they should both be looked up to for guidance and inspiration. The mystical nature and otherworldly nature of the front cover is unconventional for heavy rock, perhaps focusing more on gritty reality for inspiration.

Rise Against - Ready To Fall

The video begins with a long range shot of the Earth, above its atmosphere, The fact the video begins in space shows its not any ordinary video, Out of this world almost.
The next few shots we see is a medium close up of the lead singer and a montage of shots of animals and their treatment by human beings. Close up's of the lead singer show a waterfall thats undisturbed in the background, and he is hoodless, as if he is comfortable in those surroundings, whilst other close ups show a broken treeline in the background and his hood is covering his head and he has a look of worry on his face. Shots of the band are shown with them standing in a de-forested wood, with both the band and their equipment lying inbetween or on top of severed tree stumps, the background is covered in an orange glow and smoke, perhaps representing fire, and suggesting it caused the damage. Where the song gets more upbeat and the lyrics become louder and faster, as the lead singer is screaming the lyrics down the microphone, shots are shown of animals in distress. By this point in the film the audience realizes that the band is trying to get a message across about the environment and the way humans treat it. The shots focus on the lead singer whenever the band is shown however the other band members are not given a insignificant amount of footage. The band is then shown to be walking through a forest, and as trees are cut down, and dead fish are seen in the river, the members look visibly distressed, or annoyed. The most influential shot is one of the lead singer, with an annoyed look, viewing straight at the camera, connecting with the viewer, the shot then pans to face the opposite way where a log is shown to be shredded by a woodcutter. This image tries to connect to the viewer, showing visual connection via the lead singer and then trying to instill guilt in the viewer for the destruction of the planet. The next major change is where the shot goes back to the band, this time a long shot, the wood in which the band were shown earlier, the smoke has cleared, showing the extent of the destruction, the lead singer drops his microphone, as if to give up, perhaps sending the message that this is what humans are doing, this co-incides with a lull in the music where its almost silent, as the music begins again he bursts back into life. The video is un-conventional as in it has nothing to do with the lyrics of the song, however the nature of the video is clearly Political. Showing a clear statement of the band's resentment of the overuseage of the earths materials and abusing of life. The video constists of footage from around the world, and a recording of the band in a wood. The change in scenery and location shows the bands attempts to try and get everyone listening around the world.
The band itself is here trying to promote itself as a green-friendly band, a move which could add popularity to it, or take it away, depending on the audience. All the shots in the video try to connect the audience to their motive, showing both the good side of the world, and then its subsequent destruction by humans. The sound is both diagetic and non-diagetic, the band is performing on screen, with the music playing in sync. The shots then go away from the band and the music continues. The Video was made in 2006, in comparison to the last two video's shown. The global mainstream paranoia is shown to have influenced bands once again, with the video 'I Wanna Rock' shown as an Anti-Establishment which arose from the 1970-80's teenage rejection of the paranoia concerning the cold war, and their intentional igronance to try and stabilize the political situation, and here again the Global concern is with mankind's contribution towards damaging the Earth, and the Video reflects current affairs once again.

Judas Priest - Painkiller

The Video begins with rapid shots with silhouette's of people. The shots are all medium close up's or close ups. As more shots are shown it is now known that the band is there, and in some sort of warehouse, their equipment is present too. The sound begins immediatley and is diagetic, as it is in sync with the band performing in the video. The camera focuses on the lead singer, however does not dwell on him for too long, the rest of the band are given just as much of the spotlight. The most interesting thing about the video is the absence of colour, as it is shown in black and white, the notable exception being the lead singer's eyes at the beginning which are shown to be a solid glowing blue using extreme close up shots of his eyes we are given the impression that the video is meant to scare, or freak out its audience. The mise-en-scene is mostly an industrial warehouse or storage area, with pipes, and other objects in the background. This reflects on the image of Heavy Metal of an Industry-bred music form and a cold sharp sound to it. The band are all wearing some form of leather, associated with the band and heavy metal bands, a trend that was started by Judas Priest's very own Rob Halford. The song is both fastpaced and sharp, this constant bombardment of thrashing and beating is reflected by the extremely rapid transition from shot to shot and the number of shots present. At the end of the video the lead singer is shown whilst the shot changes, yet he does not, he stays in the foreground whilst the shots change around him, this is due to the rapid succession of shots between him and different shots of the warehouse, making it appear if he is omnipresent. This focusing on the lead singer after the beginning of the video shows his importance as the song progresses.

Twisted Sister - I Wanna Rock

The video begins with a classroom full of teens, who are not under control whatsoever, when a teacher enters the room he instantly goes berserk. The teacher represents authority, when the band appear on screen they begin to humiliate him by throwing him though the ceiling. This anti-establishment behaviour appeals to the rebellious nature of teenagers.
The band itself is dressed eccentrically wearing makeup and the lead singer is wearing a wig, despite being male, this however was accepted at the time, being the 80’s.
The teacher throughout the video tries to halt the efforts of the band to perform, this constant assault also represents the attempts by society to constrain the band, perhaps the genre in general.
The opening shot is a long range shot of a classroom where students are in disarray.
The second shot is a tracking shot of the teacher starting on his feet and then zooming to his head to show his facial expressions and agner at the chaos of the class. When the band finally appears it is a medium shot of the band, this then quickly changes to another shot, shots of the band and teenagers all cheering to the band and singing the song are shown. Multiple medium to long shots of the band performing are shown, altogether the shots place emphasis on the band and their connection with the teenagers (representing their audience) and with eachother they are better off. Their isn't much sound other than the song present in the video, with exception to diagertic sounds such as the teacher shouting at the beginning (which has to be noted that when the song began his dialogue stopped). The only other diagetic sound is one scene where the teenagers are banging their heads against lockers in tune to the music.

Overall the video serves as a metaphor for the band leading their audience out of the restraints of the current music industry and being rebellious. Heavy Rock/Metal at the time had this image and the video re-affirms this image by portraying rock in the form of the rebellious children and the authority/establishment being personified by the teacher. At the time rock was viewed as having negative affects on society by both the public and the government,

Research - Album Covers (II)

This is the album cover for Iron Maiden's 2006 album "A Matter of Life and Death", the bands name is at the top of the album cover, it sits behind the main image. The main image is interesting to look at and a lot is going on, it would appeal more to a male target audience dude to the violence taking place. The name of the band is in thier own unique font, which is different to that of the album title, which sits at the bottom of the page, in the foreground in front of the picture, utilizing a industrial looking font. This ties in well with the scene which is a military one, this theme ties in with the title of the album. The way in which the Band's logo is positioned behind the scene and the album title at the foreground, could represent how the band is "unleashing" this album to the music world. The unconventional scene also contains undead soldiers, which, for the band is conventional, but for the rest of music, not so. This is Iron Maiden's telltale theme of the undead, which was many of the genre's that Heavy Metal bands used to express their music in video and art. The world also seems to be burning around them, showing effects of war, and the skeleton's represent death.

Research - Chosen Genre.

This lesson i have watched several music videos just to give me an idea of the way in which directors and bands link their video's to their music, or not at all, and how the video is timed to relate to the music in it. In future posts i will post both the video's i have watched and individual analysis for each one. I have chosen to focus my attention on music video's of the heavy rock/metal genre. However I will analyse music video's from several different and varied artists, both in the style of their music and the period it is from to see how the genre and its video's have developed over time to represent their different audiences and their emotions/thoughts. As rock is traditionally listened to by rebellious teens, as it first was when it was introduced, I will see if that teenage following remains, or whether or not the genre has stayed with its first audiences and is not as Popular as its first emergence in the 70's and its Golden Age in the 1980's.

I will look at the widely accepted founders of the Genre, Black Sabbath, and then see how their music changed with Judas Priest discarding the blues roots of heavy metal. The sound of Heavy metal then developed through time with bands such as Iron Maiden, Metallica, Dio, as well as their Glam-Rock cousins Motley Crue and Kiss. To the contempory rock bands such as Slipknot, Rise Against and The Darkness

Research - Album Covers (I)

The central image is one of a bird, an eagle, which appears to be constructed out of metal, the bird could represent the freedom of heavy metal after the recent changes in the genre, this album was released in 1982, the metallic appearence and the direction of the bird gives it an intimidating image, with the bird screaming, this links in with the title "screaming for vengence", the title is relativly small, especially when contrasted to the main image, and the band logo as well, the most important is the Band's name rather than the album title, hinting at the band selling off existing success rather than the album itself, and its content. As the bird is made out of metal and the genre of the music is heavy metal, this again links in with the style and culture surrounding the genre, which is one of a rebellious, almost agressive music time at the time, smashing the established music industry with the new wave of sound, the movement itself was named the new wave of british heavy metal, which is personified here in the agressive metal bird, swooping in on the music industry.

Introduction

I will use this blog to document my research, planning and creation of a music video for my media studies A2 coursework. Over the next few weeks i will update my blog with my progress and research.
